I was valedictorian at Dartmouth, completed my PhD at Oxford, earned my MD at Harvard Medical School, and grew up in a family where medicine was practically the family business. But I was also a patient. In my early twenties, severe inflammatory bowel disease took me from the laboratory to hospital beds, intensive care, and some of the darkest moments of my life.
